This French style pith helmet in white is the original design from Vietnam. A hundred years ago, the French discovered the advantages of the material used to make these hats. The pith is from trees in northern Vietnam and has properties that make it both a good sun and rain shield. These helmets are made in Vietnam using the techniques inherited by the former French occupiers. This style has the biggest brim, about 7cm wide, and is thus arguably the most functional.

Due to the handmade nature of the Pith Helmets, please be advised that there may be some minor imperfections in the construction of the hat. These imperfections should not hinder the look or the wear of the helmet.

  • Shell made of 100% pith
  • Exterior made of 100% cotton
  • Lining made of 100% cotton
  • Adjustable cotton sweatband
  • Features decorative chin strap and buckles
  • Brim measures approximately 7cm wide

Hat Sizing Info:

Small/Medium adjustable cotton sweatband fits heads from 55 cm to 57 cm.

Large/X-Large adjustable cotton sweatband fits heads from 58 cm to 61 cm.

Very nice - exactly like the site image. This one is very well manufactured. I had to return another white Pith helmet (”British Army Zulu War”) because of the poor manufacture I found on it. I would purchase another one, if i could be shure of the quality - as this French one was made. Beautiful piece - this one!

Generally good, except the buckles on the chinstrap are paper-thin. Upon trying to gently loosen them, the buckle immediately bent. Hopefully this is because they are intended to be decorative rather than functional, but as it's not mentioned in the description I am left concerned it is a quality issue which will affect other parts of the hat.

Papillon here we come Bought one of these (white) as an alternative to the excellent Bombay Bowler version (khaki/sand), which I bought earlier in the year. Same high quality of construction, finish and leather strap. My Bombay was in the larger size and is a bit on the roomy side, so I bought this French one in the smaller size. Perfect. Although essentially summer sun hats, I still use them when working in the garden throughout the seasons. Surprisingly shower proof too.

What I Always Wanted! All right, field-tested as appropriate. 27 in the shade, so perhaps 32-33 in sunlight, taking into account the wind chill factor. So... still quite warm summer-ly weather. VERY pleasant experience. As the hat never touches the top of your head, there is ample space around and above the crown, and air can circulate freely. In fact, there are some silly whistling noises when wind meets ventilation holes :) You can even skip wearing your sunglasses. The brim is wide enough that you are permanently walking in your own private shade. After a while, you forget you are wearing it, and it's only the curious looks from people walking past you that remind you of the fact. I always wanted one since I was an easily-impressionable boy (some might argue I have not changed all that much), and now that I got round to looking pith helmets up on the internets, I snapped mine up as soon as I set my eyes on this page :)
